Description
To provide traction and head-end power for the new push-pull trains the Erie Lackawanna received in 1970, NJDOT contracted with GE to provide 32 units of an entirely new model of diesel locomotive, the U34CH, New Jersey’s Unique U-Boat.
When new, EL 3351-3372 and later Conrail, used them in “unauthorized freight service” during motive power shortages on weekends. One additional unit was rebuilt and modified from a Chicago and North Western U30C for another commuter agency in the late 1970’s.
They served more than 20 years, finishing with the New Jersey commuter duties. Most went to Mexico upon NJ Transit retirement and presumed scrapped.
EL 3372/NJT 4172 has been preserved and painted into the as delivered EL/NJ DOT colors.
